1.History
Aspendos, an ancient Greco-Roman city in Turkey’s Antalya province, is renowned for its well-preserved theater and other architectural marvels. Located 40 kilometers east of modern Antalya, it was one of Pamphylia’s most significant cities during its peak in Roman times, flourishing through trade and commerce.
Aspendos came under Roman control in 190 BCE, but its history dates back much further. The city’s political relevance was relatively minor compared to other regional powers, though it played a role in key events. The Persians captured the city in 411 BCE, using it as a base, and in 333 BCE, Alexander the Great marched into Aspendos after conquering nearby Perge.
The city later surrendered to Roman forces in 190 BCE.
Ancient Buildings and Aspendos Theater
Aspendos is most famous for its theater, one of the largest Roman theaters in Asia Minor, and one of the best-preserved examples of Roman theater architecture worldwide. Constructed in 155 CE by the Greek architect Zenon during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, the theater could accommodate 7,300 to 7,600 people. Its structure, partially built into the hill, minimized construction costs and complexity. The high stage isolated the audience from the outside world, contributing to an immersive theater experience.The theater remains in use today, hosting the annual Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival, a renowned cultural event that attracts about 10,000 visitors.
Beyond the theater, Aspendos boasts other significant architectural remains, including a 3rd-century CE aqueduct featuring two unique siphons, which once transported water over 19 kilometers to the city. Additional ruins include a stadium, Roman baths, basilica, agora, and a nymphaeum. The nearby Roman Eurymedon Bridge, which was reconstructed in the 13th century, also stands as a testament to the engineering prowess of the time.
Aspendos remains a fascinating site, not only for its theater but also for its advanced water infrastructure and other Roman-era constructions, marking it as one of the most significant archaeological locations in Turkey.
2.How to get there
Aspendos is located about 45 kilometers east of Antalya. The easiest way to reach Aspendos is by car, following the D400 highway, which is well signposted. If using public transport, take a bus from Antalya to Serik, and then a taxi or minibus to Aspendos. The journey by car from Antalya takes about 40 minutes, and the ancient theater is the highlight of the visit.
